One day at the end of June 2025, my husband and I came across a Reddit post: "Take care of a rabbit for two weeks." Sounds cool, we thought. We were planning to spend the 4th of July at home, and how cool would it be to hang out with a rabbit?

Living with a megacolon rabbit changed my life. For the better.

Having fostered McMuffin, a glamourous, sophisticated girl bun who is very gentle, sweet and sociable has been such a treat. She doesn’t let her condition change the way she behaves. She still has excellent litter habits. She doesn’t chew. She doesn’t dig. She gets along with my German Shepherd and tolerates the occasional run in with my senior boy bunny, Lucky. She learned to go up and down stairs with me and can take them just as fast as any other bunny.

I started fostering rescue bunnies nearly four years ago. In that time, I’ve had the privilege of fostering almost 30 bunnies! I share my fosters widely on social media, and with every single foster bun I’ve shared, I inevitably get asked why I don’t “just keep” them.

I know these comments are well-intentioned, and I love hearing from people who have noticed my fosters’ progress or have well wishes, but the question remains: why don’t I just keep them?

If you’ve ever hesitated adopting a disabled pet, I understand — I did too. It’s natural to assume it will be overwhelming. But what I’ve learned is that you don’t have to be someone extraordinary to care for them. You just have to be willing to be present and take the small steps to figure out what works best for their needs.

Days after returning Pickle back to the shelter, I found myself scrolling through pics and tearing up because I missed her so much.

I texted the husband: “I miss Pickle.” 

His two-word response: “Get her.”

And so we did. Pickle reacclimated to our home in no time and now lives the life of a queen.

Two years ago, I was busy. It was the middle of my senior year of high school and I was juggling AP classes and college applications while continuing with extracurriculars. Despite all the busyness, I made time to engage my love for rabbits. Every Saturday, I looked forward to seeing the many bunny faces at House Rabbit Society Headquarters in Richmond, California, where I volunteered. The smell of hay drifted in the air as I walked through the doors, excited to see rabbits newly arrived, and check on those who were still there from the week prior.
