Foster for House Rabbit Society

Make a meaningful difference for at-risk shelter rabbits. Our foster volunteers give our rabbits a wonderful temporary indoor home while they’re waiting to be adopted. Often, this is the first time a foster rabbit has had a comfortable, loving space.

We’ll match you with a rabbit who’s right for your experience and provide you with all the supplies you need to get started. You provide the love and attention your foster rabbit deserves! We only ask for a 2-week commitment but you may choose to extend your time with your foster rabbit.

Fostering is a great way to learn about rabbits before committing to adopting! We offer a free Rabbit Care 101 class on Zoom you can take to learn more about getting your space ready for a rabbit and how to care for them.

For those with a little more experience, we are always looking for fosters for rabbits who need medication, shy rabbits who need more socialization, and behavior rabbits who may nip.

FAQs

How much space do I need?

Plan to have room for a 4x4 x-pen as the rabbit’s own space and space to run around for exercise. Most fosters find a standard family room to be the best spot to host their foster rabbit.

I have a dog and/or cat, can I still foster?

Yes! Indoor cats and rabbits get along quite well. We recommend keeping your dog separate from your foster rabbit. Check out our rabbits and other species guide for more information

What if I want to extend my foster period?

We love it when people choose to foster long term. By hosting a rabbit for a long term foster, it allows us to save more rabbit lives.

How do I prepare my home?

We recommend putting house plants out of reach, covering or tucking away power cords, and putting chewable items (like books) out of reach of your foster.

How long is the foster period?

The foster period is 2 weeks or 1 month depending on your schedule. As a foster you have the flexibility to foster when convenient for you.

How do I return the rabbit at the end of my foster period?

After you pick up your foster rabbit, you will receive a link to schedule your return appointment. Simply pick a date and time that works for you.
