House Rabbit Society Welcomes Newest Board Membe
House Rabbit Society is proud to announce the newest member of the Board of Directors - long time HRS volunteer Sondra Lewis.
Sondra graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in psychology in 1986. After spending 5 years working with special needs individuals, she returned to university to receive her BSN in nursing. For 25 years Sondra worked as a RN in a variety of roles, including brain trauma nurse, home health care nurse and 17 years as an operating room nurse. She also completed a certification program in wound care.
In 2018, Sondra, who always had a passion for animal welfare, took on the position as Rabbit Caregiver at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. It was here she became familiar with the HRS and worked towards achieving the goal to become a HRS educator.
After leaving BFAS in 2022 to care for her parents, Sondra became a remote volunteer with the HRS. She hosts Rabbit Care 101, Introducing Rabbits and 1:1 bonding support. With her passion for bonding, she went on to assist in the creation of the Hopscotch bonding handout and the first draft of the upcoming bonding section for HouseRabbit.org
As part of her first day as a board member, Sondra was happy to answer a few of our burning questions.
How did you come into learning about (and loving) rabbits in particular?
When I applied to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in 2018, I was offered a position in the Bunny House. I had never had or been around rabbits, so it was a brand new experience for me. I fell in love immediately and adopted my first rabbit within a month of starting the position. I was inspired to learn everything I could about rabbit care and their welfare.
What is your favorite thing about rabbits?
My favorite thing about rabbits is their binkies. This expression of happiness, joy and contentment captures their essence and always makes me smile.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering and educating the public?
I love volunteering and educating people about rabbits because it’s life changing for both the buns and the humans. I also love to interact with people who want to learn and open their homes and hearts to these wonderful creatures.
We are so excited that Sondra is taking her volunteering to the next level. Her experience and unique skillset will help influence resources, educational materials and HRS educational direction for years to come!
